Tradition: The Hamburg European Open is the oldest tennis tournament in Germany - and one of the most traditional tennis events in the world. The "International German Tennis Championships" celebrated their premiere in 1892 on the grounds of the "Eisenbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst", the oldest tennis club in Hamburg. From 1924 on, the Rothenbaum venue in the Harvestehude district was the final location for the tournament. Since the introduction of the ATP world rankings in 1973, all 26 world number one players have participated at the Rothenbaum. The record winner since the beginning of the professional era is the swiss Roger Federer with four titles.
